What’s going on?
A Spectacular Year for the Northern Lights!
2025 is one of the most spectacular Northern Lights years in decades.
With the solar cycle reaching its peak, the Arctic skies around Tromsø are glowing brighter and more often than usual — giving visitors an extraordinary chance to witness nature’s most magical show.
As you might have read on several sites, 2025 is shaping up to be a truly spectacular year for the Aurora Borealis in the Arctic region around Tromsø. According to the Norwegian Space Agency, we are currently heading toward a solar-maximum peak — meaning the charged particles from the sun are creating more frequent and intense auroras than in many years.
Here are a few exciting facts to spark your inspiration:
Solar activity peaks occur roughly every 11 years — and this cycle is right in that window for 2025.
The region around Tromsø is perfectly placed under the auroral oval, giving you one of the world’s best vantage points for the lights.
Experts now expect unusually high aurora-activity not only this season, but well into 2026 and beyond — so your chances for a show-stopping display are excellent.
Whether you’re out on the fjord, under clear mountain skies, or simply stepping outside your accommodation late at night — this year, you’re more likely than ever to witness shimmering curtains of green, purple and pink sweeping across the Arctic sky.
Stay tuned — the night sky is putting on a show you won’t want to miss.

How is a Northern Lights Chase in Northern Norway?
Actually, here in Northern Norway, we have Northern Lights all year long. But, to see them, obviously, you need a clear sky and a dark night. And that this is not on a yearly basis! Summertime here, means also Midnight Sun which is the period where the sun does not go down. Because of that, from middle of April to end of August, there is too much light to see one Aurora in the sky.
What includes a Northern Lights tour with Ersfjordbotn Brygge?
So, if you plan to see the Northern Lights, Ersfjordbotn Brygge welcomes you in one of their Rorbu from September to March. For a night chase, you start at 18:30 with our guide and his mini bus which suits for max. 7 people. With a good local experience, he is able to chase depending the Northern Light activity and the weather forecast.
Between Finland border and the north of Ringvassøy Island, he is fixing your night’s schedule. That schedule includes a training to take pictures with your own camera because special equipment and settings are required like a tripod for example. Don’t miss to take one of yours if you have!
Our service includes also some other professional pictures taken by your guide. Pictures are shared some days after by email. Depending the chase, you can be back at your holiday place at midnight or later if it is necessary. Like it can be a bit cold outside, we plan for you some winter suits and a fireball. And then, as a local norwegian, you are able to stay some hours outside waiting for the magical phenomenon.
For sure, this is an unforgettable northern journey! The cherry on the cake is stories and tips shared by your guide. His passion for the Northern Lights is really not boring. With him, you reveal your child part that lies dormant in you! Emotions of a chase are just a training before your big meeting with the Green Lady.
Why choosing Northern Norway more than an another country?
In our days, there is not only one best place in the world to see Northern Lights since they have their own activity and movement around the upper part of the Globe. Don’t forget by the way, there is the same phenomenon in the South, named Aurora Australis. A place even colder for human life…
So, with some apps, you can follow the Northern Lights’ forecast: their movements, their strength (KP), their polarity (Bz). All that indexes are important to chase good. But as we said before, the weather forecast is also important. It is Nature, there is no button to push to switch them on…
Finally, you know now that you need t:
Choose a good guide in a good company (like us!),
Avoid the city lights
in a place the northernmost you can!

Besides, most of them are located in our island Kvaløya, next to Tromsø, at only 25 min by the road. But the best is to start from there, and save time, isn’t it?

Don’t trust people who had heard that it is really cold and really dark!
One the one hand, concerning the darkness, even if it is the Polar night, you still have light. No sun rays but still lights. All our activities follow daylight to schedule them the best.
One the other hand, concerning the coldness: it is not here either! Thanks to the Gulf Stream which is protecting us since it follows the Atlantic current. So Lapland, Finland, Sweden and Norway’s inner lands are thoroughly colder! Our basic temperatures during winter are between -10 to -3°C by day and night… You can handle it easily for sure! Have a look on our specific post to prepare rightly your luggage.
To finish, we advise you also our second websites dedicated to Arctic activities and booking. You will find the Northern Lights Chase and all the others to do by day here in the same time. With that from now, you can plan all your holiday’s schedule!
