Discovering the special light in Northern Norway

Starting by the North is an interesting choice because you have not only sceneries and wildlife, you have also 2 experiences to live: polar night or midnight sun. So it doesn’t matter at you plan to come by summer or by winter! For sure, it will be unique!

And when we talk about polar night, we think obviously about Northern Lights too. That’s why we offer tours with our second company Arctic Booking : everything is ready for you in the same place!

During that season, dark lights offer a special cosy mood where everyone wants to enjoy snow, northern lights, fireplace / plaid and coffee. Actually, there is a Swedish word to describe this mood, this one is popular all over the world: HYGGE. And in Norway, the translation is KOSE (pronunciation is “kousse”). We use a lot the expression “Kos deg” which means in a way: enjoy it

Prefer a cabin along a fjord than an hotel in a city center: Norway is Nature not building!

Beside, and in order to discover Norway, it is comfy to stay in a cosy cabine like the ones of Ersfjordbotn Brygge. This place is really close to Tromsø but on an another island called Kvaløya. It is only 25min by car from Airport to the village.

Kvaløya means Island of Whale, and it is true, there is, depending years, whales and orcas coming here from November to January. Apart from the fact that you can see orcas and whales, Kvaløya has so much to offer and to visit. In winter or in summer, it is crazy how much spots you can enjoy, how much animals you can meet, and Ersfjordbotn is one of them. Really famous to be on one hand, the closest and most beautiful fjord from Tromsø. And, on the other hand, one of the best northern lights spot!

So come and enjoy a cabin along a fjord like the Ersfjorden!

Why choosing Norway to see the Northern Lights

Ersfjordbotn Brygge advises you its place not only like one of the best place in the world for chasing Northern Lights but also to enjoy outside activities by day!

Up to the Polar Circle, it is the easiest way to see Northern Lights. The more the north you are, the better. But our goal here, is not only to offer you a good answer about the Aurora but more to advise you some tips to enjoy all your holidays.

How is a Northern Lights Chase in Northern Norway?

Actually, here in Northern Norway, we have Northern Lights all year long. But, to see them, obviously, you need a clear sky and a dark night. And that this is not on a yearly basis! Summertime here, means also Midnight Sun which is the period where the sun does not go down. Because of that, from middle of April to end of August, there is too much light to see one Aurora in the sky.

What includes a Northern Lights tour with Ersfjordbotn Brygge?

So, if you plan to see the Northern Lights, Ersfjordbotn Brygge welcomes you in one of their Rorbu from September to March. For a night chase, you start at 18:30 with our guide and his mini bus which suits for max. 7 people. With a good local experience, he is able to chase depending the Northern Light activity and the weather forecast.

Between Finland border and the north of Ringvassøy Island, he is fixing your night’s schedule. That schedule includes a training to take pictures with your own camera because special equipment and settings are required like a tripod for example. Don’t miss to take one of yours if you have!

Our service includes also some other professional pictures taken by your guide. Pictures are shared some days after by email. Depending the chase, you can be back at your holiday place at midnight or later if it is necessary. Like it can be a bit cold outside, we plan for you some winter suits and a fireball. And then, as a local norwegian, you are able to stay some hours outside waiting for the magical phenomenon.

For sure, this is an unforgettable northern journey! The cherry on the cake is stories and tips shared by your guide. His passion for the Northern Lights is really not boring. With him, you reveal your child part that lies dormant in you! Emotions of a chase are just a training before your big meeting with the Green Lady.

Why choosing Northern Norway more than an another country?

In our days, there is not only one best place in the world to see Northern Lights since they have their own activity and movement around the upper part of the Globe. Don’t forget by the way, there is the same phenomenon in the South, named Aurora Australis. A place even colder for human life…

So, with some apps, you can follow the Northern Lights’ forecast: their movements, their strength (KP), their polarity (Bz). All that indexes are important to chase good. But as we said before, the weather forecast is also important. It is Nature, there is no button to push to switch them on…

Finally, you know now that you need t:

  • Choose a good guide in a good company (like us!),

  • Avoid the city lights

  • in a place the northernmost you can!

Hidden gems are waiting for you in Northern Norway

Where up to the Polar Circle, would you enjoy Northern Lights easily then?

Your best option is definitely Northern Norway. Over there, there are so many hidden gems waiting to be explored, in an area that is absolutely stunning and like nothing you've ever seen. So don't miss out on the experience of your lifetime because you're too busy trying to cross an item off your bucket list!

Northern Norway is more and more famous as one of the best travelling experience

Don’t think only travelling to see Northern Lights, but also to visit and enjoy by day. With that, you optimize your holiday’s investment and you collect fantastic memories by day and luckily by night if the weather and the aurora's activity allows you to.

FORSIDE web.jpg

Indeed, our local place, Ersfjordbotn is known as one of the most beautiful fjord around Tromsø. Tromsø city is an island welcome tourists in hotel. Our place is the most cosy village for doing outside activity without the massive number of people starting their day from a same pick up point.

Besides, most of them are located in our island Kvaløya, next to Tromsø, at only 25 min by the road. But the best is to start from there, and save time, isn’t it?

A family friendly place to experience thousands of outside activities

Activities you can find here are most of the time outside’s ones: top tour ski, husky and reindeer sledding, fishing tour by boat with or without a guide, fjord visit by boat or by bus. Definitely it is a family friendly place where to enjoy together!

Don’t trust people who had heard that it is really cold and really dark!

One the one hand, concerning the darkness, even if it is the Polar night, you still have light. No sun rays but still lights. All our activities follow daylight to schedule them the best.

One the other hand, concerning the coldness: it is not here either! Thanks to the Gulf Stream which is protecting us since it follows the Atlantic current. So Lapland, Finland, Sweden and Norway’s inner lands are thoroughly colder! Our basic temperatures during winter are between -10 to -3°C by day and night… You can handle it easily for sure! Have a look on our specific post to prepare rightly your luggage.

To finish, we advise you also our second websites dedicated to Arctic activities and booking. You will find the Northern Lights Chase and all the others to do by day here in the same time. With that from now, you can plan all your holiday’s schedule!
