A Record-Breaking Northern Lights Season in Tromsø’s Ersfjordbotn

This winter brought one of the most spectacular Northern Lights seasons in Ersfjordbotn, with frequent, vibrant aurora displays dancing above the fjord near Tromsø.

Why This Northern Lights Season Has Been So Exceptional?

This winter has delivered one of the most spectacular Northern Lights seasons in recent memory over Ersfjordbotn, just outside Tromsø. Guests and locals alike have witnessed frequent, long-lasting aurora displays with strong colors, fast movement, and clear visibility deep into the night.

So why has this year been so good for seeing the Northern Lights?

1. Solar activity is near its peak
The Northern Lights are driven by activity on the sun, and we are currently approaching the solar maximum of the 11-year solar cycle. During this phase, the sun releases more solar flares and coronal mass ejections, increasing the likelihood of strong aurora activity reaching Northern Norway.

2. More frequent geomagnetic storms
This season has seen an unusually high number of geomagnetic storms, which push the aurora oval further south and intensify displays above Tromsø and the surrounding fjords. The result? Brighter colors, more movement, and aurora visible even earlier in the evening.

3. Ideal local conditions in Ersfjordbotn
Ersfjordbotn benefits from exceptionally low light pollution, open northern horizons, and reflective fjord landscapes that amplify the visual experience. Combined with stable winter weather and clear cold nights, conditions here have been close to perfect for aurora viewing.

4. Longer, darker nights at the right time
Peak solar activity has aligned perfectly with the darkest months of the Arctic winter. This overlap dramatically increases the chances of seeing the aurora multiple nights in a row — something many of our guests experienced during their stay.

A Season to Remember

From soft green arches to explosive curtains of purple and pink dancing above the fjord, this season has reminded us why Northern Norway is considered one of the world’s premier destinations for the Aurora Borealis.

With nature performing at its very best, Ersfjordbotn once again proved that you don’t need to travel far from your accommodation to experience truly unforgettable Northern Lights moments — sometimes, all you need to do is step outside and look up.

Fishing Season Update: July Fully Booked – Limited Availability Ahead

The summer fishing season in Ersfjordbotn is in high demand. July is fully booked, while August and September are filling up fast. A limited number of weeks are still available for late-summer fishing in Northern Norway—with boats and waterfront accommodation ready just outside Tromsø.

The summer fishing season in Northern Norway is in full swing, and interest in stays at Ersfjordbotn Brygge has been exceptionally strong. July is now fully booked, while August and September are filling up quickly. A few select weeks are still available for guests planning a late-summer fishing trip above the Arctic Circle.

Located just outside Tromsø, Ersfjordbotn offers direct access to rich fishing grounds known for cod, halibut, pollock, and coalfish. The combination of sheltered fjords and open sea makes the area ideal for both experienced anglers and those new to sea fishing in Norway.

Guests staying with us enjoy comfortable apartments right by the water, with rental boats moored just steps away from the accommodation. This makes it easy to maximize time on the water—head out early, return with your catch, and relax back at the pier as the midnight sun (or early autumn light) sets over the fjord.

Late summer and early autumn are particularly popular among fishing guests. The sea remains productive, the days are calmer, and the atmosphere is quieter than peak midsummer—perfect conditions for a focused and authentic Northern Norway fishing experience.

If you are planning a fishing holiday near Tromsø in 2026, we recommend booking soon to secure one of the remaining available weeks in August or September.

👉 View availability and book your fishing stay directly on our website to ensure access to both accommodation and boat rental during the season.

Early Snowfall Transforms Ersfjorden!

Winter has arrived in style — and ahead of schedule!
Winter arrived early in the Tromsø region this year, bringing an impressive snowfall that transformed the fjords and mountains into a white Arctic wonderland weeks ahead of schedule.

The Tromsø region experienced a remarkable early snowfall, transforming the landscape into a white wonderland weeks before the usual season. Local reports noted significant snow accumulation across town and nearby fjords, signalling that the Arctic winter is well underway.

Here are some of the standout facts from this unusual event:

  • The snowfall came earlier than expected, marking one of the earliest major snow events in recent years for the area.

  • In central areas of Tromsø, accumulations quickly piled up — suggesting this could be one of the heavier early-season snowfalls on record.

  • With heavy snow so early, the conditions are already shifting: roads, tracks and nature have entered full winter mode, giving guests and locals alike a taste of the season ahead.

  • The timing offers a special advantage: for anyone staying in the area, whether for fishing, auroras or nature experiences, the early snow adds a dramatic backdrop and an extra layer of winter atmosphere.

For our guests staying at the Brygge, this means: imagine stepping out of your accommodation to crisp white surroundings, snow-laden trees reflecting twilight, and the fjord shimmering under a fresh blanket of white. It’s an ideal moment to embrace the Arctic’s quieter, more intimate off-peak ambience.

We recommend dressing in layers, checking the road conditions for your transfer or boat charter, and taking advantage of this early-season window — both for the stunning scenery and the peaceful vibe. Because next year’s guests will surely remember this early snowfall too.

A Spectacular Year for the Northern Lights!

2025 is one of the most spectacular Northern Lights years in decades.
With the solar cycle reaching its peak, the Arctic skies around Tromsø are glowing brighter and more often than usual — giving visitors an extraordinary chance to witness nature’s most magical show.

As you might have read on several sites, 2025 is shaping up to be a truly spectacular year for the Aurora Borealis in the Arctic region around Tromsø. According to the Norwegian Space Agency, we are currently heading toward a solar-maximum peak — meaning the charged particles from the sun are creating more frequent and intense auroras than in many years.

Here are a few exciting facts to spark your inspiration:

  • Solar activity peaks occur roughly every 11 years — and this cycle is right in that window for 2025.

  • The region around Tromsø is perfectly placed under the auroral oval, giving you one of the world’s best vantage points for the lights.

  • Experts now expect unusually high aurora-activity not only this season, but well into 2026 and beyond — so your chances for a show-stopping display are excellent.

Whether you’re out on the fjord, under clear mountain skies, or simply stepping outside your accommodation late at night — this year, you’re more likely than ever to witness shimmering curtains of green, purple and pink sweeping across the Arctic sky.

Stay tuned — the night sky is putting on a show you won’t want to miss.

Northern Lights Norway: experience a chase in Northern Norway

When you decide to travel to see the Northern Lights, you have to invest in a real chase. It is not only to have better chance to see them, but it is also to live a special experience in Northern Norway.

In Northern Norway, you are up to the Polar Circle, so you have better chance to see some Northern Lights than anywhere else in Norway. But where to go? How to know when to see them and how to catch them with a camera? For that, you just need to come with us, at Ersfjordbotn Brygge and experience a chase!

Northern Lights Chase in Norway

Why call we that a chase? This is just because it is tricky, but so awesome to see that it worths it!

Actually, a such experience consists to start early by night…well night here in Northern Norway can start early…2 PM! But we use to start our tour at 6:30 PM.

11411622_986013404751999_5727470239016314887_o.jpg

Just a reminder that up to the Polar Circle, you have the Polar Night and the Midnight Sun. One stays down to the horizon line during almost 2 months (from November to January) , the second stays up during the same time but in summer.

Joking aside, if you want to meet the Northern Lights, called also Aurora or the Green Lady, you need to have it above you in the sky basically. For checking that, here in Northern Norway, we use some apps on smartphone which notify us when it is coming.

To imagine the phenomenon, we can describe it like a cloud turning up to the globe, with more or less density and intensity and never the same shape. We have also apps to inform us how it looks like hour by hour. So imagine coming here without any of these tips, you can stay in the coldness from daytime to nighttime, and never see anything!

With our professional northern lights chaser, we decide where it is the less cloudy in order to have better chance to see it. But don’t worry you are at the best place in the world to see them! Once, we have an itinerary we can start to drive until the time that special magnetic colored cloud is above us and just cross fingers to see something. Like we use to say:

We have the skills but unfortunately any button to switch on it!

Northern Lights Norway: more than a chase, a real Norwegian experience

To across the area where we decide to chase, we are in a mini bus, with a local driver. So don’t worry, he knows perfectly how to drive on ice with spikes wheels of course!

Besides, our time of travelling is also really interesting because on the one hand, we have time to share with you some local stories, cultural and traditional ones…

On the other hand, you can see along the road our specials friends which come up when it is quiet and dark: polar animals like moose, fox, otter, reindeer, wolves, wolverine etc…!

When we will be outside, ok it could be really cold but we provide special suits, we make bonfire, we drink warm tea, coffee, soup… Like we are Norwegian, we know perfectly how to stay good outside for a long time. From Vikings, we are use to enjoy an outside living, so be part of it!

As you can now understand, chasing is not only meeting the Aurora, it is also discovering another part of our lifestyle, our story and our animals.

More informations about Northern Lights Tour are available in our website dedicated to activities you can do with Ersfjordbotn Brygge.

To finish, spend few minutes just to discover our cabin “Rorbu” to rent at our address to stay and enjoy the Fjord-lifestyle. Our village is one of the most famous and closest to Tromsø, well-known also to see beautiful northern lights.
